My best friend has never been camping, hiking, has never been west of Minnesota. My best friend wasn't born here. When I think of home, I think of the land, before I think of the people, I think of my human mother right alongside mother earth. My best friend is a computer science major. I wanted to show him what home looked like for me. He may be leaving the country in the not-so-distant future, and it was important to me that I showed him what America really is, not the governing body that represents it and dictates the decisions he can make with his life, but the land we have the privilege of inhabiting. "There are certain things the government can never take from you... your relationship and time in this land is one of them." I wanted to show him the solitude and safety of true wilderness. To be reminded that there are things far more real and terrifying than the pieces of paper that control our lives. I wanted him to have joy, freedom, to be unwitnessed, alone. I wanted him to feel at peace and at home. He did, and I did what I set out to do. I also got to make one of my dreams come true and finally saw Yellowstone and Glacier National Park. These drawings are inspired by this trip and live as a memory of this life-changing friendship that I am so grateful for.
